Okay, first, basically this whole movie was Thor struggling forward through some kind of windstorm, and I enjoyed looking at that very much. I have to admit that I am not a huge fan of Chris Hemsworth with his shirt off - his arms look like hams! Those are too much arms. He does not need all of that - but put a cape on him and I will watch him run up hills in slow motion all day.
I enjoyed looking at Asgard very much. I really appreciated how entirely ridiculous the villains were - I'm not a big fan of a realistic, well-thought-out villain, and Dark Elves hellbent on destroying existence are about my speed. I personally really like older, responsible Thor. He takes things seriously! He is tactful and stuff! He's really good at hammer-fighting!
I also really appreciated Loki in this. I appreciated that he was so completely the author of his own problems, and he knew it, and he felt terrible about it, but he just kept doing it because he's Loki. I also appreciated that while he was sympathetic the movie at least acknowledged the terrible shit he did during The Avengers.
I wonder how whoever came up with Thor hanging his hammer by the door felt about having come up with the sight gag that everyone seems to agree made the movie. Millions of dollars of special effects for some marginally forgettable space battles, and the thing that everyone talks about (and reacted to in the theater) involves a prop hammer and a coatrack.
I didn't even dislike Thor/Jane in this, which I normally do, and of course Darcy dipping Ian the Intern was an epic moment. The whole end battle was really engaging, too. I would say all in all this is probably presently my second-favorite movie in the Avengers universe.
Could we just stop having women slap dudes in the face in movies, though? Perhaps no one could hit anyone else that they are dating, have dated, or would like to date? I would like that a lot. Especially since the power imbalance between them really is such that he could crush her like a bug, and it doesn't feel particularly cute to be reminded.
Because the rule doesn't apply to people who are not romantically interested in each other, I enjoyed Jane slapping Loki very much. Because I am a horrifying hypocrite, also I ship it now.
I'm remembering now what a fun fandom this was to write and read in. Massive, mind - unnavigably huge to me - but really fun.
