Does this story require a great deal (or um, any) knowledge of SPN canon?

Because, John Sheppard story by seperis and I am so very there...but I know only what I have absorbed through fannish osmosis (aka hot brothers Sam and Dean fight monsters, and have a special car). Horror, as a genre, kinda makes me hide under the bed.
