perfume: Andy Tauer Un Rose Chypree and Incense Rose

I will admit that I got my samples and immediately opened every vial with zero percent discipline, and I had high hopes for this one, which I put on my hand last night, where it stayed cool. I was thinking things like "foggy garden" and "a rose for cardigan-wearing". I put it on my wrist proper this morning, and it opened up with a big delicious bloom of citrus, which is the way to make me like anything, and which also, in combination with the rose, does what I am stuck describing as a bubblegum thing, though I hate bubblegum and like this. Now that it's backing off a little, it is a nice rose, somehow a little free of that old-lady-soap-shop thing. What it's not free of is horse shampoo. Dammit, Mane and Tail, why did I let you ruin me for perfectly good flowers.

I think if there were to be a day when I really wanted to break out the cardigan-and-bun, this is still the perfume for that outfit - I can't seem to see rose as being sensual no matter what is done to it, but I could see this conveying a certain buttoned-up respectability, which is something that I do in fact sometimes try to convey.

I am now going to ditch my previous commitment to testing one thing at a time like a smart person and slap a whackload of Incense Rose on the other wrist. I guess proper wear-testing will have to wait for another day.

On, it went bitter in the opening fast, and then moved quickly through that bubblegum phase, and now I'm getting a massive yellow-orange hit of spices in a big boiling cloud, which I have to admit that I'm mostly noticing as something that's keeping the rose backed off. I think it's actually enough staticky smell interference that I can't think just "horse shampoo" - reminiscent of horse shampoo, yes, but actual horse shampoo, no. I can see how this is considered a unisex or masculine rose, it's got that kind of dry-and-sharp thing going on.

Incidentally, I keep catching chypree from my left, and now at a size of "tiny dab" and a distance of "not a millimeter from my nose" I'm liking it more. I feel like I can smell the mossiness, and something citrusey and spicy. In fact, now that I give it a second, the rose has backed way off and is giving me some space and it's nice. I think rose will never not smell like Perfume Perfume to me, but if I needed to smell like Perfume this is the right one.

The right wrist has boiled down to rosey cologne, for sure, which is interesting. It's got that cologne smell I identify as Stern, though the rose is an interesting, literary note, and kind of respectable. I was complaining to Rydra_Wong that because of my gender and gender presentation there are certain editorial points I can't make with perfume, and it's a shame that Man Wearing Roses is one of them. Woman In Hoodie Wearing Cologne is pretty likely to be one I do try to pull off, though.

I continue to be increasingly charmed by the chypree. While the rose may be the least of it, I will say that the structure of the rest of the perfume is hitting less of the Alien Fakesmell thing and more of the me in twinset mode smell. Me As Girl Also Fuck You I Smell Like an English Garden In The Rain. Yep. This was a good choice, though the sample might honestly last forever. I don't go into twinset mode that often.

The incense rose is, surprisingly, starting to strike me as less successful than the chypre. I like the wide-open sandiness and warmth of the incense, but let's face it, I probably recognize incense best when it's in full-on headshop dankness. I keep coming back to "I would respect the dude who wore this, but that dude is not me." It really does strike me as an intellectual rose, though, one that is fully self-conscious that Yes This Is Rose What Of It. I think I will give it a second try by itself later, but I think this is one that I appreciate without identifying with.

This is the longest I've ever dealt with a rose without scrubbing, incidentally, and now when I smell it I only get "horse shampoo" every other time. So maybe that's a note that fades! That's pretty helpful.

Incidentally, I probably won't be able to last the day without testing L'Artisan Al Oudh, because I dabbed some on out of the vial yesterday and started giggling. Wow, that is spot-on.

Oh, now there's a challenge ...

Yeah, it's pretty full-on to start with. *g*

I take it "hilarious skank" was achieved? \o/
