So
phnelt recced me this story ("The Roads Never Lead Where They're Supposed to Go" by
eleveninches), in which John is a big ole tree-hugging botanist whose black mark was getting arrested at a WTO protest.
And the first thing I thought was, there should be an AU in which the team is an anti-globalization protest affinity group! Teyla's an ecofeminist, Ronon's a deep ecologist, Rodney is... a campus socialist? Something nerdy like that. And John is the guy who wears work gloves to the protest so he can lob the tear gas canisters back over the fence.
And then Rodney tenderly washes the pepper spray from John's eyes and they kiss. Except, they shouldn't really when they've just been exposed to pepper spray. There can be UST! UST and vinegar-soaked bandannas and train-hopping kids in black Carharrts. It would be kind of smelly and awesome. For me. And my personal cultural references.

(If I actually wrote this, and someone wanted to follow up with a neoconservative political AU, I would consider it complete justice. And, dear everyone: if we disagree about politics, I hope we can still be friends, because I disagree about politics with myself most days. But you have to admit, there's a certain cultural moment in time there.)
Why YES I'm still sick and kind of fuzzy and spent the day on the couch staring at my WiP! I was supposed to do homework, and also go do a thing, but 1) I'm sick /end whining and 2) it was a really nice day for staying put and reading.
And if anyone else out there likes AUs,
phnelt and
lavilleperdue left a massive SGA AU rec list in the comment thread yesterday. Some of them are pretty well-known, and some I hadn't heard of; there was not a single story on there that I didn't massively like.

Good luck with the WiP and getting better -- sometimes it's nice to have a reading day! I think I've read all of the AUs on that list. I don't know if that should be a point of concern.

And John would totally use his family connections and charm to get inside various installations and get documentation. Like if they went against stealth sonar he would sneak onto all of these military bases. It would be awesome!
And Teyla would have to do all the negotiations with the stupid people and try to get funding for various projects and Rodney would be so disgusted with all of the bureaucracy and people's stupidity.
Great. Thanks so much, you've now made me want a story that I CAN'T HAVE so bad that I can taste it. And I'm glad that you liked the recs. I have to go off and mope now.

And cheers for the links to the recs. I'm finding a few I haven't read before. I have a serious thing for AUs, for some reason...

You know, everyone seems to love AUs, which is interesting, because it really is straddling the line between fanfic and original fiction. There're a lot of AUS that I would read without knowing the canon at all, though I guess I'd miss a lot of in-jokes.
