It's entirely obvious that this is a subject that you know well and have a passion for, and it really works.
Your skill as a storyteller is really displayed here. You build the characters from scratch, using canon as a template, while allowing the reader to fill in the presumed associations between the text and canon. It's them, reduced down to their essential selves, and yet, you could have also substituted names and called it original and it would have still worked beautifully. The best kind of story!
It also brings up all sorts of memories of the late sixties and early seventies for me. I was too young to join any protests, but I grew up with the solid notion that those kids out there doing sit ins and peaceful marches were the heroes of the generation. Truly, another awesome story!
