So on Pern, right, on the Northern Continent they basically cleared all the large vegetation as far away from all dwellings as possible, right? And the Northern Continent is heavily settled - they talk about how wood ash is hard to get because of this.

Wouldn't this cause climatic issues?

Hm, I hadn't considered this (probably because I first read the books around age 13), but you'd think so. Also... so many issues related to needing to expend a lot of time and energy gathering/harvesting food as a result! Which I guess you could say explains Pern's total technological stagnation for so long, but still...
