::sigh:: I think I've finally decided to give up all but carefully-chosen and cheerful Who meta and discussion. Because really, is there anything more buzzkill than having to defend all your character preferences like it's your doctoral thesis? Your doctoral thesis about killing puppies, to a roomful of professors endowed by PETA?*

Is it the het? Does het really bring the wank to the yard? Is there some meta reason for this that has to do with the patriarchy or overidentification or accessibility? Luckily, Who still produces good fic, great vids, funny macros, and, you know, episodes, so I think I'll get by.

Clearly, I have been both spoiled and sheltered by my other fandoms, which: hi, I love you all the more right now.

*This is not about the race/class/religion meta. I like that.

A good friend of mine [both RL and LJ] has dipped her toes a number of times in Who fandom and written some really very good fic. She says they are all batshit crazy, cliquey, rude and unwelcoming which - being that she is the nicest, most innocuous person on the planet - I think says it all!

So it's not just you!

Hm, well, I wouldn't necessarily say it that way myself (though her experience sounds rougher than mine -) but you know, the other fandoms I'm in are for obscure little shows that you have to go out of your way to watch, where Who, though it's a fringe show in the States, is apparently a major part of the childhoods of the entire British Commonwealth. So it makes sense that Who fandom is too big to have an accessible group dynamic: they kind of need to break into subgroups, and turn people away, and also, it is true that the bigger the group, the more representatives of that 95th percentile and up of batshit crazy.

I think the only sane way of being a fan of something Who-sized is to have a small, sane group of people to talk about it with, and oh look, I have a friendslist already! So I will keep talking about Who here, I guess, I'll just try to do it in the least wank-attracting way possible. (And I have a WiP going that I really kind of love, which is in a rare pairing, thank jesus)
