And if I wasn't being good about not spoiling even a little before the cut, that would read: seriously, show, 90% more mansex, 90% less gore plz.

I mean, this was the episode that restored me to my comfortable place of: Team Torchwood: often really bad people! For instance, she turned out to be a terrorist alien, so how fortunate that they happened to have some innovative interrogation techniques just lying around! I kind of embrace this, on one level: we're starting to learn that Jack's morality is pretty grimy (they tried to do this last season and it didn't seem to sink in) but I really really want consequences for him, and for them in aiding and abetting him and completely losing touch with everyday morals. I really, really crave some follow-through in that.

I have an urge to write crazed half-asleep metas here about everyday morality vs. the Greatest Good for the Greatest Number, conscience, RTD and Doctor Who's third season contrasted with the Fortunate Fall in medieval religious literature, et cetera. But I will save it for a more awake time, if ever. I will leave it at: I am a complete believer in everyday morality and conscience.

I hate the plotline where the Woman Must Be Sacrificed Because She Is Not In Control Of Herself. I hated it in Cyberwoman, and I didn't like it here, and that's a personal thing, but the character was decently shaped and delivered a decent tragic monologue, so I'll accept it and move on and probably not refer to this footage again, except to source some Tosh, because jesus, Tosh. Way to completely rock the sexy librarian look. And also, that moment where she hacked the defense database, I think my theoretical Tosh crush became a real Tosh crush. Tosh!

I like the canonicity of Jack/Ianto, but as others have noted before me: the tension between lighthearted pansexual space romp and Gore! Tears! Tragedy! is still - tense. Unsettled and unsettling. I seriously wanted the "let's all have sex" line to happen in an episode I liked more, so I could wave it at people and yell BISEXUALS IN SPACE YAY.

However, I am pleased that Owen considers Owen/Ianto/Tosh an option. It may wind up fodder for lame Tosh/Owen unrequited, but it does display that certain broadness of mind I've come to expect.

In conclusion: Torchwood! A show I like, with many good episodes and many episodes I don't really rewatch unless I need the footage for something. May the balance continue to tilt in favor of the former.
