You know, I'd wondered why I threw myself so hard into fandom this academic year. I've always read a bit and lurked on fandom_wank, but this year I've picked up three new shows and read fic every single day. Today, though, I finally got most of the way through translating (to English) my fieldwork writeup from last summer. Somewhere between the part about incidence of severe malnutrition in children under 5 and the part where I noted that there were 15% more men then women in the age group where women are giving birth, something clicked. Apparently it's a lot easier to go from fieldwork to reading about space vampires than to go from field work to caring about college life.
No really, it makes sense now. Me and fandom, it is a profound relationship. Composed of escapism. Specifically, composed of the joy of TWO WHOLE HOURS each day where I don't have to think about agricultural policy and its consequences.
