sapote: The TARDIS sits near a tree in sunlight (ray)

I want to work on my story, but instead I have ten pages on ecological management of the European Corn Borer to write before Monday. Why are there no good, slashable shows devoted to the harried lives of agricultural extensionists? Somewhere in the background of early Smallville or Jericho, knowing about parasitic wasps and Bt might come in handy, but in general, forensics and particle physics seem like much more fandom-friendly fields. I consider this an oversight on the part of the media.

I did start watching Jericho, mainly because I'm enchanted with all the wandering around with candles and hauling water to do dishes. I did not exactly grow up in the Yukon Territories, but getting along for weeks with no electricity is still a problem I find familiar and interesting, or at least more interesting than the usual beautiful-people-with-problems plot. I often wish one could have post-apocalyptic fiction without the dreary necessity of an apocalypse, because I'm much less interested in who dropped the bomb than in who's going to grow the food and what people are going to brush their teeth with. Post-apocalypse Home and Garden, that's the show for me. Martha Stewart can show us how to sterilize water using nothing but a soda bottle and a strip of metal roofing.

I am not really a crazy survivalist. I just think it's so interesting. At least if there's an oil crash I'll have a lot of theoretical knowledge I can dispense, right before the real crazy survivalists shoot me and steal my canned goods.

Anyway, I have been trying to do less staying up all night on the computer during Lent, but break is next week and I'll be in the same house with my betaviewer for a whole six days! I am quite pleased. I'm going to make her watch Torchwood, the poor thing.
