I done saw The Avengers the movie! It was pretty great! BUT FIRST I TALK ABOUT MOVIE VIOLENCE IN SPECIFIC SETTINGS.
Okay so let's start by saying that I hate pretty much all comic book movies for knocking down New York City without specifying that IT IS REALLY TERRIBLE WHEN PEOPLE TRY TO KNOCK DOWN NEW YORK CITY NO THANK YOU D: D: D: D: I mean I guess eventually Batman punches whoever it is but they've ALREADY KNOCKED DOWN NEW YORK CITY a bit and I always had trouble not sitting there grimly calculating cause-of-death ratios even before, to be inappropriate, shit got a little too real on that front.
No, I am no fun at violent movies. Basically I am this video game mod but turned into a person. At all points in time. With everything.
This means that the point at which I basically relaxed and accepted that I could in fact enjoy an action superhero movie romp was the point at which Joss Whedon pauses to establish a reasonable evacuation plan for the civilians so that the heroes/conveniently alien villains can just knock shit around without me sitting there making a morbidity/mortality table. IT WAS SO GREAT I wish all superhero movies ever established that everyone who is not a superhero has already left the area and therefore knocking things down is okay. SERIOUSLY it was such a relief because I too love some unrealistic kicky-punchy business on top of skyscrapers but NOT IF I AM WORRYING while it's happening.
So there was that! But also things were witty and great and I enjoyed them a lot and was basically like :D :D :D :D :D :D for the entire last half.
I could definitely see ships at all angles of the various Avengers. I kind of don't want to overresearch the pre-existing comics canon because my experience is that it tends to pretty well stomp how I imagine things happening like a boot on an ant.
For instance, I really like the Hawkeye/Black Widow friendship as portrayed in this film. I like how they are grim war buddies with an unarticulated bond! I would be okay if they were kind of in love in a war buddies way, though I have to wonder what all they could get up to in their personal lives that Natasha wouldn't basically categorize as "like being at work", depending on what exactly the scope of Natasha's work is. (I have to say I straight assumed it had a certain Trained in the Arts of Womanly Seduction for Espionage SEX WORKER SUPERHEROINE BUT IN A COY COMICS WAY tone but am also aware that I probably would bring a whole lot of different assumptions to that than the world at large so I shouldn't jump to conclusions. I just imagine romantically she might be really exhausted with trying to figure out what makes people tick and replaying male/female stereotyped dynamics in order to get into peoples' heads and might just be like PLEASE LET'S SIT ON OPPOSITE SIDES OF THE SOFA AND WATCH BASEBALL I am so tired.)
I imagine that given that there is one lady and many dudes there are probably slash pairings up whatever particular wazoo fandom is into this month, but I am curious what they are. I have to say Captain America/Tony Stark of Stark Industries makes me laugh because it's secretly a metaphor for capitalism in the late twentieth century and god knows I love a broad metaphor for capitalism.
Also I love Bruce Banner and want to spend all my time hugging him but in a safe way possibly from a distance. Historically I have no patience for The Hulk, possibly because I did not go through puberty with a male body and was not afraid that I was suddenly sprouting muscles everywhere and could hurt somebody without knowing it and was a bad person male id sadface sadface. But also, honestly the point at which I was like BRUCE BANNER IS MY FAVORITE AND I LOVE HIM was the point at which he was like "I live in a world where I am capable of infinite involuntary murdering no one can stop me and I spend all my time being really really furious about it so I tried to kill myself to avoid involuntary murdering but it didn't work so HERE I AM so fuck you guys I am a DOCTOR of SCIENCE who does direct services work in Calcutta." Bruce Banner and your purple linen shirt and little glasses! You just want to help people and not be bad and not punch things even a little! But it sneaks up on you how much you want to punch people and you are scared of it. That seems so reasonable!
Oh Bruce Banner and your little glasses you are the most sympathetic character EVER how did that happen because I hated all your tie-in materials and thought they were dumb.
P.S. I signed up for emails from Movieguide.org the Christian Movie Review Website because, not to be a dick about it, they make me laugh with their copious warnings for, say, environmentalism in the Smurfs. They loved this movie because it was, and I quote, good to see Captain America in charge. Like he should be.
I did not actually think that that was what happened but Captain America does make me laugh. I imagine his loneliness as a 1950s golden boy who has no idea what the hell happened speaks to a lot of people.
Also I totally want to dress like all of these all the time.
So that was a long-winded reaction post! Basically I loved it, and I was not expecting to at all. Yay.
Discusses character's suicide ideation with some degree of intensity. Also discusses sex work actually in a speculative way.
