Okay so yesterday I spent some time reading the more-popular fanfic for Teen Wolf on AO3 and

1) Oh goodness guys, I feel like I've just been on some sort of epic tour of fandom's id. Like the It's A Small World ride at Disney except, you know, pretty grown-up and with werewolves.

2)... I don't ship fanon Stiles/Derek. I am happy for people who do because hoo buddy there's a lot of fic out there for you and it gets about as lavishly strange as you could possibly want it to. I found myself falling into this weird middle ground where I didn't think Derek is reasonably well enough for the fluffy stories and is also not necessarily monstrous enough for the really dark stories.

3) So now I've become one of these people who kvetches about not being able to find stories that aren't the Epic Pairing and also complains about fanon vs. canon versions of characters. :( I guess if you stay in fandom long enough you wind up on every side of that dynamic, even the buzzkill side.

4) I am still patiently shipping every possible dynamic (I don't mind Sterek, but I also frankly think Jackson/Derek is equally plausible and might be in some ways more interesting, and I have gone from objecting to Scott/Stiles to being annoyed at how often it gets pointedly written against in fanfic because in the canon they're basically a psuedocouple.) Hell, I'll ship Scott/Isaac, I don't care. Give me a ship and I will ship it.

1) I've never liked Allison's mom as a character, straight-up, but I also was sad that the way they fixed that was not to give her something to do besides staring creepily but rather to kill her to give Allison's dad manpain :( bad canon, bad.

2) The stuff with Derek's pack in the subway car was pretty brutal - this canon really wants to have its cake and eat it too as far as how dangerous and scarybad werewolves are. I know they needed to kind of dial up the scarybad to give Allison's mom reasonable motivation for not wanting to become a werewolf, since Scott makes it seem like all you need to do is look at some kittens sneezing on youtube and you'll be fine. Still, I don't have a very high opinion of how Derek is managing those kids; I think he's not particularly mature, interpersonally, and has way too many issues to be in life-and-death charge of three teenagers. I like Derek, this is not a shipwar feeling, I just kind of want Scott to win custody of the kids, since he and Stiles seem to be doing much better jobs of things.

3) Oh god Allison with the villainy guy at the party was so sad and realistic. OH HA HA I WILL JUST BE POLITE TO YOU AND LAUGH IT OFF WHEN YOU'RE SCARY AND APOLOGIZE FOR DEFENDING MYSELF PHYSICALLY WHEN YOU GRAB ME AND HURT ME. I love that a) the canon ship for Allison seems to be Allison/growing a spine and b) the canon is pretty upfront that that's hard for her because she's a teenage girl and wants to be likable and is afraid to make a fuss and has a lot of learned social skills that make it hard for her to be like NO ABSOLUTELY NOT to people.

4) Oh blargh it's Peter. Peter, I don't give a shit about you, please stay dead, seriously.

I like that everyone could have prevented the Haunting of Lydia by actually being honest with Lydia and not making everything about them for thirty freaking seconds, though. That seems... fairly realistic. And I like Lydia having stuff to do, though hopefully soon it will be different things than walking around making faces at things.
