I've got Doctor Who WiP #2 done, except that this morning at one a.m. Debugmode Wax decided it hated minute 1:05 of my audio file, and it keeps hating it no matter what I do. I've reexported the .wav from the Audacity project. I've opened up the original mp3 and reedited it and reexported it. All of the files, so far, are having the same problem. All of them were working properly until this point. Very puzzling. ETA: Resolved, apparently through the power of prayer and restarting a lot. Technology, when will you cease to baffle me?

This is not the first indication that I may be headed for some Computer Troubles, and while I'm going to try to keep fixing this laptop as long as possible, it's going to suck when the harddrive goes and takes all my files with it. I'm thinking I need to look into external storage, and soon.

Does anyone have thoughts on external harddrives, good brands, reasonable prices, etc?

I can't claim to have shopped around extensively, but I've been using Simpletech external drives, purchased from www.buy.com (where I found the best prices). I think a firewire connection may be too slow, but it seems to work fine with a USB connection.

How long have you been using them? Are they pretty sturdy?

I've been using this brand pretty much since I started vidding, so a year. And I've traveled with them, taken them on planes, etc, and so far, no problems.

I just bought a 350G "My Book" last week and it's been wonderful so far. Plug and play. No problems. And it only cost about $120. Which, for 350G, I was pretty happy with

Oo, that is an attractive price right there. I will look into this!

My main requirement is that it never ever break, ever, but I guess I'll have to take a chance on that.

I hate to give the coporate monster Wal-Mart my money, but that's where I got it.

Yeah, I went with a 500GB MyBook (Dual interaface, even!). Amazon.com usually has reduced prices on their hardware, but make sure you check places like Overstock.com and Academic stores. I know through the Apple Education Store I got like $40 off of a $100 off a 200GB HD.

I'm seeing voteage in favor of MyBooks - do you know anything about their longevity?

My friend [livejournal.com profile] linzbnl has had hers for a few years and she's been happy with it. I kinda defer to her judgement hwen buying new tech products cause she never seems to steer me wrong.

MyBooks are so small and portable, too! And so cute.

I've got an Iomega 250GB that I've had for about a year and a half. I opted not to get the dual interface version, and haven't regretted it yet. It hasn't had a super hard life - I don't vid, but I do take it with me on trips. It's got all my media on it, so I use it all the time. I also never turn it off. No problems yet. I bought mine from CompUSA *only* because they had a rebate, but I buy a lot of my tech crap from newegg.com - their prices are usually excellent.
