I might have let the day slide by this year, but that felt wrong too.

I was sixteen years old. They offered to let us retake the math test because the teacher got a phone call and turned the tv on before all the papers were in.

There's no way to make sense of something like that, except the small human actions around it - as the New Yorker said, the kindergarten teacher who carried a student ten blocks on her back, and the couple at the top who held hands. The President has spent five years trying to tell a story about it that makes sense to us, and we can see how that turned out.

The tv clicked on, and we were watching when it happened, and I was sixteen years old.
