I vote for "start backing stuff up fast". Because I live in a state of paranoid terror about losing data, and having backups is a comforting thing no matter what you do after that.

My poor roommate, I so impose on her external hard drive. But at least there's an external harddrive around that I can use!

It's IBM refurbished and I bought it in 2005, so the warrenty's long-gone - though I will say this for Lenovo, they kept up my tech support much better than I expected them to with the buyout.

Is it a skidding metallic sound or a clicking noise. The moment it sounds like metal on metal backup immediately and take it to the repair shop. Your hdd will be toast but you can save your data and get a new *bigger* hdd.
