As far as the present SUP drama: seriously, does anyone else think, sometimes, that LJ is kind of a tiny island nation, with its own economies and industries and imports and exports and dammit, we're not medieval serfs, when will the place we live and the entire furniture of our internet lives stop getting passed from one unresponsive, absent landowner to another?

No? Just me?

No, me too.

It's just like - we're not consuming a service, we live here. I don't think they get that.

More than that -- they don't think we should think that way.

After all, the land we live on and farm doesn't belong to us, it belongs to the big castle up on the hill.

*sighs*

Peasants' Revolt, anyone?

... buy out the server and make it a cooperative? Wow, can you imagine what it would take to make that work?

I was thinking more along the lines of "Storm the castle and put heads on pikes", actually ...

But we don't need to buy their server. We just need to find viable distributed models to provide alternatives. IMHO, we need a blog program that anyone can put up in any webspace, that can interface effectively with any other blogs using the same program.

Really, the problem is that we do not control the means of production.

THIS IS WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT: we turn the capital of server space into the goods of content, but who benefits from our labor? Who?

And do they respect that they live by our surplus value? Not really!

... are we joking?
Thursday, March 20th, 2008 04:33 am (UTC)
I think I started joking, but now I'm not so sure. Because it fits way too much, and I also read this thing likening what's happening to the interwebs to the enclosure acts

It is rather. A little island in that XKCD map of the Internet.
