sapote: The TARDIS sits near a tree in sunlight (buffy)

So I've been rewatching a bit of BtVS season 5 and 6, and I still really struggle with the whole Willow/Tara thing. Cut because there's nothing more painful than watching someone *try* to like a character - )

All that aside! I have to jump on the bandwagon (late!) by recommending the vid Nineteen by [livejournal.com profile] ryty, which is a Willow/Tara vid that takes a lot of that footage-that-sapote-has-opinions-on and makes it into a vid that makes me feel like I'm fourteen years old and have just been bowled over by my first big girlcrush.

Run, do not walk, to [livejournal.com profile] fan_eunice and [livejournal.com profile] greensilver's new Torchwood vid. Because yes, they went there, and Jack's made up his mind.

It is cold and I am doing the jobsearch thing and there is much sigh and woe in the world, except that

[livejournal.com profile] kuwdora MADE ME A TOSH VID!

This makes my whole world turn yay. Tosh! Pretty! I was totally going to write one of my usual obsessive debriefs where I go second by second and point to what I like, and then I realized: I would just wave my hand at the whole thing and go ALL OF IT OMG.

SO FULL OF JOY.

So a couple of months ago, I was talking to Kuw about vidding, and she sent me the draft of her Due South vid. And I didn't get it, and I didn't get it, and then on lunch break I looked up the lyrics and sent her a massive, all-caps email about what an awesome subversive reading it was.

And she went O_o and then said "Oh, wow, I don't know if I meant it that way." Cue several months of me trying to twist her arm into posting it and her going "I just don't know about all this."

So either I killed an awesome WiP through overanalysis, or [livejournal.com profile] kuwdora made an unexpectedly complicated - but sturdy! - narrative by accident. Or both. Anyway, she says nice things about me in the post. Also, this is the vid where [livejournal.com profile] kuwdora really starts to show her flair for action sequences, which - I am the kind of vidder who would vid nothing but longing glances if my pride allowed it, so I completely admire and am baffled by her ability to make running/jumping/shooting people look so very awesome. Usually that's the part of the show where I wander off to do dishes.

So yes. Better Off This Way, by [livejournal.com profile] kuwdora. In its rambling way, this is a rec, insofar as one can rec something one beta'd. Also, this is sadly the first time in a while that Paul Gross arms are totally in context: \o/!

So, hey: [livejournal.com profile] kuwdora recommended some Who vids, and one of them was Angel by [livejournal.com profile] 45eugenia, and seriously, buttsex aside, this may be my favorite Doctor/Master vid period. The transitions! The slow edits! The beautiful desaturated palette! And, yes, there be porn. So be warned, or take heart, depending.

While I'm at it, here are two non-porn, safe-for-work photomanips (another) by the same artist. Which, pretty.

As far as I can tell, some of these were vidded years ago, but since I'm pretty much imeem-only they're new to me. Warning: none of them are particularly cheery.

What Can I Do by [livejournal.com profile] sweetestdrain. (imeem) (lj post) Nancy character study: The Empty Child. I'm a sucker for anything good about a secondary character, especially a non-love interest secondary character.

Ghost by [livejournal.com profile] morgandawn (imeem) (lj post) Okay, yes, it is Nine/Rose (how did you guess) but I'd call it more of a Nine character study.

All the Lonely People by [livejournal.com profile] laurashapiro. (imeem) (lj post) I'm sure you've seen this somewhere, because the internet is very good to us, but you must watch it again, because it is epic. It's about Rose and the Doctor, and it's not 100% flattering, and also, pretty true.

And for posterity's sake, here is where I collect Rose fanvids. Because now that I've got Doctor/Master (and/or Doctor/Master/Captain) in my world, I can approach these things with humor.

You know, I think I like every one of the Season 3 DW vids up on imeem so far. Though I particularly recommend:

House of Wolves(imeem) (lj post) by [livejournal.com profile] severa for awesome, bouncy Doctor/Master angstiness. My first viewing was more "quite like", but I just rewatched it and am edging towards "love insanely". My favorite moment is around 0:43, and by the way, I think there is some good characterization in here.

Wasted (imeem) (lj post) by the ever-capable [livejournal.com profile] fahrbotdrusilla: Episodic Lucy character study for Sound of Drums. I liked Lucy quite a bit in the short time where she was more evil than exploited. And I am entirely unspoiled and speculating when I say I hope she returns as a WASP supervillian in future episodes. Anyway, I think this vid is beautifully put together, especially for an episodic.

I know there's probably good stuff on youtube, but it's hard to just plunge on in there and wade through all the talky-face. Does anyone have any tips for navigating Youtube fanvids?

btw, feedback feedback feeeeedback vidders.

[livejournal.com profile] gerbal and I went to Hometown Comic Book Store yesterday and loaded up on Buffy Season 8 and the Serenity Comic. I am not big on comic books - I'm just not that visual - but man I am glad I made the leap.

Because of the vaguely spoilery things! )
And here's where the spoilers get specific )

I have never been a comics nerd before! I am enjoying it.

Also, it's interesting how different a character and an actor can be, isn't it? I was never all that into Sarah Michelle Gellar, but the Season 8 vol I cover art makes my heterosexuality crumble a bit. Oh, Sunnydale people. I missed you.

ETA: Also, while I've seized control of an internet connection: vid rec! Set Fire to the Third Bar by [livejournal.com profile] sol_se. (Torchwood, Jack/Ianto). I am not particularly into either this song or this pairing right now, and I still love the pants off this video. Sol_se does some really cool things with timing, and makes connections that are surprising and interesting. I know the whole TW fandom has seen every frame of S1 Jack/Ianto footage a thousand times, but she still manages to do new things with it.

In ascending order from "a little sniffly" to "still wakes me up in the middle of the night".

Hello, SGA, by [livejournal.com profile] merryish. (SGA) This is more angsty and beautiful than sad, and very compelling. I'd consider this the basic primer to angsty!doomed!Sheppard circa season 1. And frankly, that's still my favorite Sheppard.

Out Here by [livejournal.com profile] heresluck. (Due South) When I first watched this, I'd just seen Call of the Wild for the first time, and I left the world's sniffliest comment on heresluck's livejournal. And she replied "But it ends happily! See? They're in love!". And then I went their love is so beautiful and got more kleenex.

On a technical level, consider that Due South is essentially seventy hours of talky-face, and then observe how much emotion heresluck has wrung out of those scenes. Some day I want to be able to do things like that.

Cold Cold Water by [livejournal.com profile] sdwolfpup. (Battlestar Galactica) I am only partially versed in the BSG canon, but I felt like this vid just turned me inside out. Lovely stuff.

This is How it Works by Lim. (SGA)

I had to go get that link with the sound off. And my hand over the screen.
You've got to read the story by [livejournal.com profile] synecdochic first (I figure everyone's read the story, but there might be some stragglers). This is the one that honest-to-god woke me up at three a.m. I was shaky and cold in the middle for days after reading / watching this, and that, I call art.

ETA: Got one set of vidders confused. That is embarrassing.
ETA2: And a broken link is now fixed. I lose at HTML today!

Five Vids from Five Fandoms: (starting with ones that everyone's already seen, or should have).

New Frontier (Firefly) by [livejournal.com profile] heresluck
I just discovered this vid this morning, because I am very gun-shy about Whedonverse vids. I said this in the vid comments and I'll say it again: I usually think nothing can be as good as Whedon source material. This is. This is amazing.

Zebra (Due South, Ray K.) by [livejournal.com profile] astolat
I watched this video and I fell in love (/lust. Mostly lust) with Ray K. Then I started watching Due South. Three and a half seasons and thousands of pages of fanfic later...

Living Dead Girl (BtVS, AtS, Faith) by [livejournal.com profile] bradcpu
Oh my god I love this vid. It's a very dark Faith character study with Great Big Angst. This feels like an argument vid to me: it goes places with the character that aren't spelled out in the canon, but that fall into place beautifully.

You're So Damn Hot (Torchwood, Jack/Ianto) by [livejournal.com profile] melina123
If you're in the Torchwood fandom, you've probably seen this already. It brings me joy.

A Little Less Conversation (Multi: every OTP in the history of television) by [livejournal.com profile] giandujakiss. This is the vid I show to people when I try to explain what vidders do. It's great fun and beautifully constructed. Plus, Inara/Kaylee FTW.

--

Bohemian Like You (Stargate Atlantis) by [livejournal.com profile] astolat I tried for five vids by five different people, but here's an extra, because this is damn good. I was already following SGA when I first saw this vid, but I think it was here that I really fell in love with McShep. Astolat really brings the OTP, doesn't she?

ETA: Watch all six in one playlist (for a full half hour of streaming goodness). Don't forget to leave feedback!
