And while Stephanie Meyer's portrayal of just how scary one presumes it is to be expected to go from Virtuous Chaste Courtship to doing the intercourse in the space of a day is very real and touching, something about the fact that it's the second day of Bella's honeymoon and she's already figuring out how to cover the bruises burns that goodwill right off.

ETA:
Bella: "I want to go to college."
Edward: "No, you don't."

ENJOY A NICE STAKE DINNER, ON ME. ARGH. ARGH.

Yeah but okay the bruises are from consensual sex. They're more like BDSM bruises than domestic violence - I'm not saying Meyer is a feminist by any stretch, but I don't think that's what she's condoning.

Yes, and I am really quick to villianize this series in any way I possibly can. And that's mean of me? But - they aren't bruises from a particular kind of sex, you know? They're just bruises from Sex The Way Sex Should Be According to Stephanie Meyers (And Also Possibly Jesus). There's a huge amount of trippy power dynamic contained in the vampire myth; there's a fascinating topping-from-the-bottom thing going on in all the stories about girls who tame sexualized monsters. There is something objectionable to me in the way that Stephanie Meyers tends to wave some thinly-veiled-Jesus and glitter over that and make it All Just Fine. I read it as wifely submission instead of kinky submission, and thus it creeps me out.

But many supernatural romance fantasy things have objectionable elements, and some of them get me, objectionable elements and all, and some of them don't get me and so I spend all my time objecting - so I'm not saying that someone who Twilight just hit right in their vampire kink shouldn't like it. I just - derive gleeful fun from not liking it? Basically?

I definitely respect (and support!) your right to make fun of Twilight. Because it's absolutely guilty pleasure fanfic, IMO. Like, it's not much better than that. And there are a lot of things that kind of bothered me as I was reading, because omg could Edward and Jacob be any more possessive if they tried?! SRSLY?! But like. I dunno, Bella kinda comes out super strong and kick ass in the end, with a super cute fam and a really healthy sex life. I also like the idea that she's the one initiating the sex originally and isn't actually in pain, just sore. Edward is the one who is horrified by the bruises - it takes him ages to touch her again. And then in the end, they're equals. In fact, I would say in a lot of ways she's stronger than him, stronger than most of them.

I don't even know if that was a proper response to your comment? But yeah, I'm a little cracked out today.
