So [livejournal.com profile] bradcpu was having vidding idea angst today, and apparently it's contagious.

Because, y'all, it's Doctor Who, and it's to a song I could stand to listen to over and over, but there are:

Thematic problems: It's pretty much nothing but angst, and also the lyrics are kind of sexual. I like the dubious platonicity of Doctor / Rose love; I would have to really, really work the metaphors both in song and footage to get it to a place I'm comfortable with. Also, the POV isn't immediately clear in my head, but that's pretty standard.

Technical problems: Getting my hard drive clean enough to vid is a massive (if admittedly already necessary) undertaking. Also, I don't know how to do fancy, fancy effects like slow motion. Fade to black almost did me in last time. So the learning curve will be steep.

More thematic problems: Why do I never have sweet, cute, hilarious ideas? No, it's all angst all the time. ::heavy sigh::

Time management problems: or, how awesome is it that I'm on vacation long enough to go "what do I want to do? Work more on fic, or vid?" Maybe I can do both?

::contemplates::

(non-specific, just blathery)

Incidentally, where do y'all get your DW torrents? Anonymous comments are screened, so if anyone wants to drop me a community recommendation, that would be supercool.

What editing software do you use? I only ask because altering the speed of clips is dead easy with mine.

oh god, I use debugmode wax. It's not very awesome, but it was free, and I wasn't sure I was going to vid again when I started using it.

I would be delighted to upgrade at this point, though.

Well, I use Adobe Elements, which is the cheaper Adobe program. It's fine though, it allows for very precise cutting and it does all kinds of stuff - I'm finding new things every day, LOL - I don't think it is too expensive, either. I'm not entirely sure how much it costs, to be honest, because I got it as a present.

To be honest, *cough* cost is no element in the era of bittorrent. I try! I put my pocket change in the "buy a license" jar every time I use a program! (no, really).

::feels guilty::

I am going to try to figure out Wax slowmo first, because to a certain degree I like struggling with obtuse programs. It's like how you have to think through what you're going to write more thoroughly when you're using a typewriter. But (to extend the metaphor) typewriters are still no good for writing backwards and in pink. Thanks for the recommendation!

Sounds like our ideas are problematic in a similar way, especially what with the sexual and the technical.

Also, I don't know how to do fancy, fancy effects like slow motion
Are you sure you're not me??

I mean it about the contagious muse! THANKS, Brad.
(on the other hand, if I can get it to work it will be kind of cool)

see, I usually believe good editing can stand in for lack of cool technical bits (and I've seen you use cool technical bits too!) but there are a few things that I'm discovering I do need. Slow mo and fade to black are really high on that list.

Anything I've learned about editing and tech has been purely trial and error. Emphasis on the error. But I agree with you about good editing trumping all.

Good luck!

P.S.

Might want to screen the comment regarding a community.

got it! Thank you so much!

Yeah, this idea seems to be taking over my brain: I actually storyboarded it out on notebook paper, since I can't go in and edit yet.

Right now I'm using Blaze Mediapro for the chopping and Wax to put the clips back together - Wax goes a bit stuttery if I try to put a clip of more than 40 seconds in there, which helps keep my transitions snappy, at least! My poor laptop. It tries so hard.

Thanks again for link and info!

I know exactly what you're going through. Hopefully I'm going to finally upgrade my laptop soon, and it's going to be like the weights have come off-- I'm already getting new vid ideas that I'm saving for the new 'puter.

I've been using Roxio, which gives me fits-- crashes at THE most inappropriate times and flakes out on me with transitions, but it's done it job so far.

Forget even thinking about Media Movie Maker-- what a joke. Crashes if you have anything bigger than 45 seconds.

luckily or unluckily, my OS is actually too old for WMM. I've seen very competent vids done in WMM, but it has always sounded like a painful process *g*.

Some day I will post an extended complaint about the hoops I jump through to make my computer vid, but right now I'm too pleased at the thought of getting into it again, overnight rendering and all. If only I can get slow motion.

I send good techy vibes your way. Wow, "over night rendering". I've been there. A few times.

I'm not sure if when you say "anonymous comments are screened", you're wanting people to comment anonymously so you can screen them? If so, feel free to delete this. Also, yay DW vid!

For torrents, I usually try here (http://thesprawl.se/) first. Other places I go to when that fails are here (http://www.torrentspy.com/"), here (http://www.tvtorrents.com/), or here (http://www.demonoid.com/).

Is this bad form to link to places? Should I have sent this to you in an email?

hey! Some people belong to livejournal communities that post megaupload and yousendit links, and those communities usually have really strict rules about mentioning them in unlocked posts because they don't want to get shut down. Googleable websites like you mentioned are usually fair game, and quite handy! Thanks!

I know what you mean about having to get your hard drive clean -- I imagine laptops aren't ideal for vidding anyway, but video clips take up so much room (I have been itching to vid lately, which is surprising because I haven't made a music video in ages, but of course I only get cracky ideas that will entertain only me)! The only program I've ever used is WMM, though, and I don't think it can do slow motion, so I can't help you there. Still, good luck with all of your creative ambitions -- it is nice to have the free time to do various fannish things!
