Is it bad that my first thought about the OTW Vidding Documentary is, wow, we're a lot more normal looking than I thought we'd be? (I always have this reaction when I see pictures of fans: hey, you don't look like you spend all day writing about dudes getting it on! And then I always think, OMG, my bus driver probably writes HP slash). I think I have some guesses as to which vidder is which, which of course I am not going to post because that would be mass-shunningly rude. But if I saw you: hi! I'm sorry to say you look less funny than I kind of expected! But I mean it in a nice way!

I kind of wish I'd gotten in on this thing, because nobody vids for as cheap as I vidded, when I vidded. Of course, I probably melted my harddrive doing it. But still, I think having someone on the software montage going "VirtualDubMode and Debugmode Wax! On Windows 98!" would have been fun.

ETA: Having watched it all: that was fabulous, I wish that there was twice as much of it. My favorite was the Good Vids/Bad Vids, because up till that point it's all: Sunshine! Rainbows! Happy friends! And then all the sudden the enormous level of snark it takes to sort through the internet every day surfaces.

Guys, guys, I finally downloaded VirtualDub! There are no stray frames! There are keyframes! I have been working since February in a video editor that didn't do keyframes.

I could seriously weep for joy. This is awesome.

Alright, friends and friendslisters - I am stuck trying to find one particular clip for my DW/TW vid and I can't seem to get around it.

Has anyone seen a clip where Jack is walking away in his big flappy trenchcoat and he turns around and looks back towards the camera? Because I would really enjoy having that.

Also, different project, but say I was to be making an Owen character assassination study. How creepybadwrong is it fair to make him? Thoughts? Because I'm pretty sure I can make a vid that makes him look bad enough that I have to post warnings.

1) Does anyone have any advice for getting into a fandom in another language? I am thinking of making the jump to reading in Spanish, but I don't know where to start. (Besides, you know, typing 'fanficción' into search engines. On the one hand, I would never do that in English; on the other hand, my Spanish reading comprehension is low enough that I will never know if I'm reading badfic)

2) Vidding woe, oh woe, and some navel-gazing )

3) I never really understood how people could not have time for fandom stuff, and then I, you know. Got a real job. It turns out eighteen academic hours != forty-hour work week. I've been coming home too sleepy to face real tv shows, so I've been watching That Seventies Show streaming on the theory that I couldn't possibly find subtext in it.

You know where this is going. As of this morning I have written 1500 words of Hyde/Foreman, and I'm showing no signs of stopping. At least I'll have something to post!

4) There's months to go, but I am sort of excited about meeting up with the Torchwood team again. They are ridiculous and dysfunctional and I met them before I met the Doctor and just sort of accepted their warpedness at face-value. And I find myself missing them, apocalyptic fuck-ups and all. (ETA: do I need to add a sanity disclaimer when I talk about fictional characters this way? Or do you, dear friendslist, also think of presently off-air dramatis personae as if they were colorful acquaintances of yours who have been on a long vacation in another country?)

5) I have been listening to so much podfic. I will make a rec list soon, because finding a good story paired with a good reader is pretty great.

6) Hi! How are you? The internet sure has been quiet lately.

Guys, vidding = the most ridiculous hobby ever.
Today I hit the overheat bluescreen once before the sun had even risen. That's right, I took five days off and today I sprang out of bed at 6:15 full of terrible ideas and ready to give my poor laptop a good thrashing. And I did. It is better now, I hope.

And by the way, this vid is already fairly crackified and now it's developing a narrative arc, which makes me highly suspicious.

Also, I've been really glad for the past two months that I started the Whoverse with Torchwood. In some ways it has made me less sentimental with the characters (yes, this is my less sentimental mode. What? Stop laughing!).

And now I have to go get on a bus and go to work, because I have been vidding for five hours. Admittedly, most of that is render time, and I also carmelized some zucchini and managed to burn mustard greens. I have many talents?

Not that I read fandom_wank, but dude, skip the wank and go straight to the picspam (sadly, all behind links, so it takes a while to navigate.)

Also: David Tennant talks about his manpants on call-in radio?

Also:

I forget that John Barrowman has little glasses. ::spontaneously combusts::

though this, in particular, reminds me that he's actually ethnically Scottish, which makes the Barrowman-lust feel a little ... endogamous. But whatev, because, shiny!

Yes, this is another killing-time-until-the-ep-goes-live post. Hi!
Also, do you know how much fun it is to vid Saxon? A lot! He is superbouncy.

Velvet Goldmine: awesomest movie in the history of the universe?

a) yes.
b) YES.

I have not seen this movie in almost a year, and yes, it is awesome.
(Also my workday kicked ass, so \o/ across the board)

If I was insanely ambitious about vidding and could also invent footage when needed )

warning: lots of embedded music under the cut.

I am totally jinxing myself by asking this, but would any of y'all out in flist land be up for a lightning-fast vid beta tonight? Possibly even realtime on gtalk or AIM? My target time for having the beta draft ready is around 9 p.m. EDT, but I'll be up later than that for sure.

I whined and swore off this project, and then it started working again, and now I'm back to the overoptimistic but still heartening idea of being done and posted before I leave town. The vid is )

Okay, does anyone just happen to have eps of Dr Who s1 & 2 lying around + a hankering to ysi them to me? I'm usually willing to suck it up and wait for utorrent, but I'm on a real-life deadline (job starts on friday = no more five-hour vidding sprees) and I'm worried that I'm going to run out of time. Also, the Recent Troubles in some of the Doctor Who communities seem to have slowed things down a lot.

I have these episodes ) already.

I figure it's worth a try to ask. Comments are screened in case of very good luck. And hey, I'm not above offering fic or a minivid as bribe, though (see: deadline) it'll take me a while to deliver it.

That aside, I'm about halfway through the song. In between church & garden and singing class last night I did about four hours of work in the coffeeshop, and that really is the perfect location: not too quiet, glare-free, and with a potentially unlimited stream of sugar-based beverages. I do believe I will do that again.

ETA: Wow. Episodes totally found. Thanks!

So [livejournal.com profile] bradcpu was having vidding idea angst today, and apparently it's contagious.

Because, y'all, I have an idea. )

(non-specific, just blathery)

Incidentally, where do y'all get your DW torrents? Anonymous comments are screened, so if anyone wants to drop me a community recommendation, that would be supercool.

Six inches of snow. In April. It happens every year, and every year we're really surprised about it.

I'm supposed to be doing schoolwork. I am. But so far this weekend I've read a lot, and made scrambled tofu (yes, I used to be a vegan, why? Stop looking at me like that!) and gone visiting. I love the rickety old houses around here that only students will live in, where everyone keeps their jackets on indoors and stands around the woodstove until the snow melts off their boots. I'm not sure I'm ready to live like that, though. I like my weatherproofed, centrally-heated dwelling, even if I keep the thermostat at approximately zero.

I did poke around with sourcing for some more vidding. I have about thirty seconds of interesting narration in my head, but the rest of the song isn't working, so I think I'm going to ditch it. Also, I'm not sure yet if I can vid Tosh at all, because have you seen how she runs in the first two episodes? For some reason, it quite bothers me. Is it just a crosscultural miscommunication, or does she really have an annoying run?

Yes, I'm judgey, and maybe losing at Reclaiming Female Characters.

Happy Easter for Easter-celebrators! I slept through church. I never sleep through church! Jesus might have risen, but I hit the snooze button. Oh well.

The tv in the internet lounge is playing SG-1. Clearly the television gods don't want me to get any homework done. I have no clue what is going on, but I will concede there are a lot of pretty people. Fighting aliens? Maybe?

I actually have to do schoolwork the next couple of weeks, even though a part of me wants to vid more right now. It's probably for the best that I put it off, because I'm actually not very musical and will quickly run out of songs I like well enough to listen to them the requisite five hundred times. (Have I mentioned how I accidentally ended up with a half-empty schedule this semester? I spend more time exercising than I do in class. And more time reading fanfiction than those two added together, to the fifth power.)

I have some vid ideas right now, but they ) aren't my favoritest. It seems best to jot them down, though. I might change my mind?

Dear internet: I need new, viddable music! After finals, I guess?

Also. ::flails vaguely at word processor.:: Dear story: resolve yourself! I really want to get the thing posted before finals start up. It's out for betaing right now, but I keep having to talk myself out of rewriting the whole thing, again. Yes, again. My beta, she is a saint.

This morning my poor little vintage Thinkpad announced that it was going to explode if I didn't get some of my media off its harddrive now. It turned out I had about five megabytes of free space left on the harddrive. And yet my computer hadn't slowed down at all. How much do I love my laptop? Very much indeed.

So I burnt all my Due South season 3 onto cds, and started mislabeling them halfway through: example:
Hot Mounty Action
My Life Among the Muskox: A Documentary
National Curling Championships, 1998
Top Ten Canadian Sea Chanties
Rescue Breathing 101.

I am way too self-amused.

I've been playing with vidding software for the last couple of days. Of course I'm running Windows 98, which means no Windows Movie Maker for me. Right now I'm cutting up clips in one freeware program and putting them back together in another; it turns out neither of them is very handy for adding music. I will figure it out. I don't expect anything internet-publishable to come out of it, frankly, but it's been way more interesting than I expected to look at how episodes are put together shot by shot.

Tonight: Dinner (veggie burger and sweet potato fries) and movie (Marie Antionette) with townie friends. Tomorrow: hiking expedition. Skipping church, even. I'm a fanvid-making rebel like that.
